Wednesday, November 27th, West Haven Vietnam Veterans President Dave Ricci and member Howie Thomas presented to Notre Dame High School VP for Academic Affairs Mr. Ruben Valencia and students the United States of America Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration Poster Series and Teachers Tool-Kits. The Teachers Toolkit provides a comprehensive packet of materials that accompany and enhance the learning experience of the poster series. The Teachers Toolkit additionally contains a plethora of resources that educators can use inside and outside the classroom to support the learning experience and efforts to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families. These resources include website links, recommended activities, books, and films, and many other materials that accommodate all ages from elementary schools and after-school programs to college-level students.
Americans from all walks of life served in Vietnam: people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, genders, religions, and sexualities. They served in different climates, geographical locations, and occupations. These posters highlight microcosms of the American experience in Vietnam, from women’s military service to specific military specializations. Although their stories may not be as visible in popular narratives of the war, their service was no less significant.
The Poster Series helps Teachers and Students recognize and reflect upon the U.S. veterans’ experience, without debating the rightness or wrongness of the war. Instead, they feature a more personal engagement with veterans’ stories and provide some historical foundation to better understand their experiences, their collective contributions and advancements to STEM, Medicine, Society, Political Sciences, and much, much more.
The West Haven Vietnam Veterans organization was privledged to be accepted as a Commemoration Partner to help further the efforts of The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration —a national 50th anniversary commemoration, authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense.
